Environmental Education in School🍂
In the era of globalizations, people nowadays do not concerned about our environment that getting worst. As we can see, all pollution that happened is caused by irresponsible human activities like open burning and logging. These activities can cause the natural disasters such as floods or landslide and based on the research, natural disaster can also affect our mental health which is known as Eco-Anxiety. It is defined as “a chronic fear of environmental doom” (American Psychiatric Association,2017).Eco-Anxiety can affect anyone depends on their mental toughness but the most high-risk groups are children. So, it is very important to apply environmental education in our community no matter what.
Environmental education is a learning process that increases people’s knowledge and awareness about the environment and associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action (UNESCO, Tbilisi Declaration, 1978). Environmental education also known as activities or programs that aim to make people aware about our ecosystem and natural world functions at the same time can develop an eco-friendly community.
Environmental education more effectively absorbed in school learning. In the primary, students need to learn about nature, ecological system and the impact of human activities to the environment. Other than that, some activities that introduce students directly to the nature for examples nature walks or school camping will allow them to experience and understand environmental concepts firsthand. At the secondary level, environmental education can be apply on their course work. Thus, they will be exposed to the environment to study ecology, wildlife, and conservation.
Overall, environmental education need to begin early in our society based on the required commitment. Through primary and secondary school learning, students or citizens must to be absorbed with the awareness about environment. They should also feel responsible and appreciate the nature as much as possible and ensure our environment keep safe for the common good.
